Best Literature of All Time – Chronological

This list is a compilation of over 25 different lists of ‘best books’ and ‘best literature’ of all time’ that I found in books, magazines and websites, arranged chronologically.  The list includes fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama.  I have included every work that was on three or more of the lists.  The number at the beginning of each entry is the number of lists that the literary work was found on, followed by the author’s name, the title, the date of the work, the category (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama or religious text) and the country of origin.  No book was contained on all the lists – the highest rated book was Don Quixote, the only work on 21 of the 25+ lists.  I have placed the title of each work in boldface.  In some cases, the works honored were not specific books but entire bodies of work, such as “poems” or “stories” – I have italicized these.
